And all while completely bypassing the competition (your coworkers).HOW TO GET NOTICED AND GET PROMOTEDThe best way to stand out and get promoted is by asking directly.  Companies often have promotion opportunities available for those who ask, long before they publicly announce the opportunity. And asking is also more effective because you won’t be competing with every other qualified person for the promotion.Some organizations can also custom-create a position for you. Your manager could design a new position, talk to other team leaders to discuss transfers, and get creative to find ways for yo u to do more (and earn more).  They key is to ask, though. Managers aren’t mind-readers and don’t always assume you’re looking to advance. (In my experience as a recruiter, many people would rather stay in their comfort zone and not advance. The point is: Your boss doesn’t know what you want unless you tell them).But don’t just run into your boss’ office and tell them you want 3x your salary or you’re going to quit (Have fun looking for a new job). There are a few CRUCIAL steps to take first.By following the steps I’m about to share, you’re going to demonstrate your value to the company and make yourself indispensable, so that you have the best possible chance of hearing “yes” when you ask for a higher-level position.1. Become ultra-reliable in your current role  The first step to getting promoted is showing your boss that you’re rock-solid in your current role.  You want to be the person who your boss never has to worry about; that one person who they know w ill get the work done no matter how hectic things get and how much else they’re worried about as a manager.  So the first thing I recommend to anyone looking for a raise or promotion is to do an “audit” of your current work performance.Review your core responsibilities (from the job description of your role) and list out which pieces you feel you’re above-average at, which you’re average at, and which need improvement or are below-average.Your goal should be to have every core responsibility be average or above-average. There should be no weaknesses, and at least a few areas should be above-average.Then, if you feel something needs improvement, either decide if you can handle it on your own, or seek assistance. Sometimes asking for advice can help speed up your development, so don’t be afraid to go to a coworker or manager and say:“I’m trying to improve in ___, do you have time this week to share some tips and ideas? It seems like a topic that you’re very knowledge able about.”Most people think asking a question is a sign of weakness that will prevent you from being promoted. ITS NOT. It’s actually a great first step to signal to your boss that you’re taking initiative to improve, and that you care about your development at work.2. Go above and beyond what’s asked of youAfter you’re consistently above-average in your core role, look for ways to go beyond your manager’s expectations. This will show them you’re working hard to contribute.Try to solve problems without being asked. Spot potential issues before they become big problems and take care of them.Anything you can do to save your manager time or effort is a big win. If you can’t solve something yourself, try to bring it to their attention before it becomes a major issue.For example, you could say:“Hi Amy, I was doing ___ today and noticed a potential problem with ___.   The issue I saw was ___. I don’t want to bog you down with details, but I thought that if this isn†™t resolved now, it could end up costing us more time in the future, so I wanted to try to stay ahead of this and see what you thought about it now.”Become the person your boss trusts as a second set of eyes and ears on the team.  Show them you’re thinking about the “big picture” and seeing beyond your day-to-day job duties.   Work to understand how the team functions overall and how they interact with other groups.This will start to signal your boss that you’re a good candidate for higher-level work.  3. Expand your job duties “unofficially”Next, it’s time to ask for ways to play a bigger role (without asking for more money or a new job title, yet).  This will expose you to new challenges, give you a sense of what type of role you’ll enjoy as you grow, and most importantly will show your boss that you’re ready for a promotion.Whereas in the last step, you were doing small things to go above and beyond your job duties, you’re now asking for responsibilities to be added to your day.  As an example from my own career: While working as a recruiter, I asked to be on the panel of people who interviewed new candidates that we were considering hiring.I wasn’t initially invited onto this panel, but by simply asking, I was able to join it! This is an important lesson to take away: If you don’t ask, the answer is always no.I could have assumed that there was a reason I wasn’t invited onto this panel and given up. In fact, the idea crossed my mind. Fortunately, I asked my boss about it, and she simply said, “Oh, no problem. I didn’t realize you wanted to be a part of this.”As a recruiter, I also trained and mentored new team members. I was given this responsibility because I asked for it, too.I’d listen to their phone calls, give feedback, teach them my best scripts and opening lines when “cold calling,” etc.This showed my managers that I was able to lead, teach, be a mentor to newer staff, and ended up earning me a promotion from Recruiter to Project Manager soon after. The key was asking for responsibilities before asking for a promotion. I demonstrated my value first, then asked for more money after.  4. Ask for a promotion (when you’re ready, not when one opening is announced)Once you’ve gone through the steps above, it’s time to tell your manager that you’re interested in an official promotion.You should do this whether or not a promotion opportunity has been announced. The timing of this is based on your performance, not based on what’s happening in the company.  As mentioned earlier, if you wait for a promotion to be publicly announced, you’re going to have way more competition. And that’s going to make it nearly impossible to stand out.  In the next section, we’ll look at how to ask your boss for a promotion step-by-stepASKING FOR A PROMOTION: HOW TO HAVE THE CONVERSATION WITH YOUR BOSSOnce you’ve followed the steps above, you’re in a great position to ask for a promotion.The best way to do this is face-to-face. It’s a bit intimidating if you’ve never done it before, but that’s why I’m going to walk you through everything you need to know.The reality is: Doing a mediocre job at delivering your message in-person is still more impressive (and more effective) than sending the perfect message via email. This type of conversion is best done in-person and your boss will respect and appreciate what you’re saying a lot more if you deliver it to them face-to-face.Set up a dedicated time to talkFirst, this discussion is important and deserves its own conversation. Don’t bring this up at the end of a regularly-scheduled weekly check-in or other meeting.Get a separate meeting scheduled by emailing or asking your boss for a time to talk.I prefer email because if you ask your boss for a time to talk in-person, there’s a chance they’ll say, “I’m available right now actually. Why don’t you step into my office?” And if you’re not yet ready, this can be a problem.So I recommend sending an email to schedule a time to talk. Here’s a template you can use:“Hi NAME,Do you have 20 minutes available to talk this afternoon? I was hoping to discuss something in private with you.Best Regards, Your Name”Practice your opening lineNext, when you walk into the one-on-one meeting, you want to sound confident and never be apologetic. Start by saying, “Thanks for meeting with me.” Never say, “Sorry to bother you,” or “Sorry for taking up your time.”It’s literally a part of your Manager’s job to discuss this with you, so never worry that you’re taking up their time; you’re not.Another way to boost your confidence is to practice this discussion at home with a friend or family member. While you can’t predict how the real conversation will go, you can practice the opening, which will set the tone for the rest of the conversation and will help you feel more calm and confident.Be clear about what you wantAfter sitting down with your manager and thanking them for meeting with you, be clear and direct about what you wanted to discuss.  You don’t want to leave them guessing, as this will be seen as a lack of confidence or lack of belief in what you’re asking for.So get right to the point after sitting down. I recommend telling them that you’re excited about what you’re doing and how you’re developing. Then, tell them you wanted to discuss a potential promotion and find out what opportunities are available. Make it clear that you’re interested in moving to a higher level position.Put the ball in their courtOnce you’ve been clear and direct about what you want, the best thing you can do is stop and ask for their thoughts.  I recommend ending your request for a promotion with an open-ended question like, “What are your thoughts?” or “What do you think about this?”This is more effective than continuing to talk and make your case because you’ll find out specific objections if they hav e any, or specific limitations based on company situation, budget, etc.  Don’t panic if they’re not quite convinced yet. You can still overcome their objections or to work toward a compromise, but you need to find out what they’re thinking first.Overcoming objections/concernsIf your manager doesn’t say, “yes” immediately, try to remain calm and ask questions like: “What’s your main concern?” or, “What factors are making this not possible right now?”You’ll find out if your manager has specific concerns about your work, or whether it’s simply an issue of the company not having a place to promote you into (or the budget to do it), etc.  Then, if it’s something specific, you can respond and address their concerns or come up with an action plan to revisit the conversation in the near future.For example, your manager might say, “You’ve been doing a great job here. However, for the next level in our group, you’d need a lot more hands-on experience with XYZ .”You could say, “Great, I understand. Is there a way we could begin exposing me to that type of work in a more hands-on manner, so that we can have this discussion again in 3 months?”Sometimes it has nothing to do with your performance, too. Your manager might say, “I agree, your performance has been outstanding. Unfortunately, the company just doesn’t have the budget to pay you more or move you into a higher-level position this year.”  From here, you could ask if they expect a new budget to be released the following year (many companies receive new hiring budgets in January of each year and do a lot of hiring and promoting at that point).Plan to follow upWhatever you and your manager decide, plan a time to follow-up.  If they say they’re going to promote you or look into a promotion, say, “That’s great. What’s your expected timeframe for this to happen?”If they say that you need to work on a few things, say, “Thanks. That feedback really helps. When would b e a good time to follow-up after I address these areas we’ve talked about?”Now you have a timeline and an angle you can use to follow-up until you get the promotion you want!Stay positive (even if you hear “no” at first)No matter how the conversation goes, try to sound positive and optimistic when wrapping up the discussion.If the company is in a situation where they can’t promote you immediately, then you can go home and plan accordingly (by deciding whether you’re willing to stay in your current role and wait for the situation to change, or whether you should begin an external job search.)If your boss told you something specific to work on that’s within your control, then you can go home and strategize about how to address that.  However, showing frustration or disappointment in-person isn’t going to solve anything. So wait until you’re home to think about everything that’s been said.Practice makes perfectIf you follow this plan, you’re going to give yourself the best chance at receiving a promotion while also strengthening your relationship with your boss.And the more you practice this type of communication, the better you’ll get at it. So if you earn a promotion now, try to repeat the process in one or two years to keep advancing your career. If you change companies, wait a year and then try this in your new company as well.If you do this, you’ll always know what type of opportunities exist in your company, and you’ll have a significant advantage over your coworkers when it comes to landing promotions as they become available. As time flies by, they should not be living on the street. It is not pleasant seeing them where ever you go. They are eve-rywhere and, â€Å"at least 6,300 are homeless at given day† (Hope para 1). As the facts says in Hope, â€Å"Statewide, 12-15,000 people are homeless at some point of the year† (para 1). Each day, the numbers of hobos in Hawaii increase because they do not have a place to stay. The homeless in the upper 49 come down to Hawaii since our weather is not as bad compared to other states. In Hawaii, the homeless will be anywhere with their tents and carts. They would talk to the ones that passes by. Hawaii’s homeless population should be addressed by the government because they affect tourism in a negative way. Mainlanders come to Hawaii to live on the streets. We ha ve a better weather climate compared to the mainland. This allows the homeless to come all the way here to live. With them on the street, it increases the population on the street. There are no official evidence of where they are coming from. Hawaii News Now mentions, â€Å"We remain concerned this program is an invitation to purchase a one-way ticket to Hawaii guaranteed return flight home† (Farrington para 8). Dissociative identity disorder, DID, as we now call it, is a mental illness where a persons thoughts, feelings, and memories are scattered throughout two or more separate personalities within the victims mind (Appelbaum 107). The only way my family and I could communicate with my mother was by writing everything down on a dry erase board. I detested seeing her in pain, and I knew she was hiding her true feelings from my sister and me every time we would visit her. It was unbearable for me to see her in the condition she was in and often I would leave the room so that I could keep myself together. The hardest part for my mother was when family would visit. She would have a hard time saying good bye, because she knew, deep inside, it may be the last time she would see them. I prayed intensely every night, crying, and begging for God to help my mom get well so she could come home; I desperately wanted my life to be normal again. I wanted my life to be like it used to be when my mom and I would go shopping together, when I would go to work with her, when I would sit and watch Mexican novelas with her while she played with my hair as I sat on her lap, and when she would brace me in her arms tightly every day before I went to school. But endless nights of praying led me nowhere. My mothers health deteriorated instead of getting better. I did not understand what I was doing wrong. I prayed for her, and believed God would answer my prayers. My mother was trying her best to live longer; but God was not letting her. Over time she lost the battle and passed away. Losing my Mom in this world forever impacted my life in ways I never expected. After her death, I blamed God for letting her go and refused to believe in him. I told myself that if God was real, He would not have let this happen to my mother, He would not have taken her away from me. I also questioned my mothers love for me, because I wanted to know why she had fought for so long and all of a sudden give up? How could she give up on her family and leave us? Then I realized, God did not take my mothers life to hurt me, He took her life so that she would be free from the pain and suffering she was going through. I then began to wonder how selfish could I have been? My Mom was in great pain and all I could do was think of myself and this led me to conclude that her leaving was for the best. Every night before I went to bed I cried, because I felt horrible. I knew God would forgive me for not believing in him, but I just prayed and worried that my Mom did not leave this world thinking that she had failed her family. Coping with her death was hard, and still is hard but I have learned a few things along the way: Never take life for granted, God has a reason behind ever situation, tomorrow is not promised like today, and to treat each day as if it were your last. As an individual, I have become a stronger person emotionally and mentally. For instance this situation has given me the courage to live past the loss of my mother and to accept reality as it comes. This has helped me persevere through other hardships I have come across and gives me strength to face the obstacles which lie ahead of me in the future. I have also become less selfish and have realized the importance of empathy and sympathy in life. My mothers death has motivated me to want to succeed in life, because I want my mother to be proud of me. Her education was limited to high school, and I know she would be happy to see me attending and graduating college. I cry from time to time as I remember how it used to be with her alive. I t alk to her at night telling her how much I miss her, and how I wish she was here to see me grow up into the woman I have become. I am certain that my Mom lives within my heart and I feel her soul in the breeze like I did that day before I walked through the church doors. If I close my eyes and concentrate, I can even picture her in front of me. I know she is looking down on me, smiling, as I write this essay to get accepted into college and begin a new chapter in my life. Even though time has passed and I am about to embark on a new journey I continue each day to smile because I know that God made the sky look as if the heavens were opening up that day for a reason; to take my mother as an angel, and yet, only to send her back down to be my angel for eternity.

The Pharaohs Double Crown of Egypt

The Pharaoh's Double Crown of Egypt Ancient Egyptian pharaohs are usually depicted wearing a crown or a head-cloth. The most important of these was the double crown, which symbolizes the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt and was worn by pharaohs starting with the First Dynasty around the year 3000 BCE. Its ancient Egyptian name is the pschent. The double crown was an amalgamation of the white crown (Ancient Egyptian name hedjet) of Upper Egypt and the red crown (Ancient Egyptian name deshret) of Lower Egypt. Another name for it is shmty, meaning the two powerful ones, or sekhemti. The crowns are seen only in artwork and no specimen of one has been preserved and discovered.  In addition to the  pharaohs, the gods Horus and Atum are depicted wearing the double crown. These are gods that are closely allied with the pharaohs. Symbols of the Double Crown The combination of the two crowns into one represented the rule of the pharaoh over his united kingdom. The red deshret  of Lower Egypt is the outer portion of the crown with cutouts around the ears. It has a curled projection in front that represents the proboscis of a honeybee, and a spire in the back  and an extension down the back of the neck. The name deshret  is also applied to the honeybee. The red color represents the fertile land of the Nile delta. It was believed to have been giving by Get to Horus, and the pharaohs were the successors of Horus. The white crown is the interior crown, which was more conical or bowling pin shaped, with cutouts for the ears. It may have been assimilated from the Nubian rulers before being worn by rulers of Upper Egypt. Animal representations were fastened to the front of the crowns, with a cobra in attack position for Lower Egyptian goddess Wadjet and a vulture head for the goddess Nekhbet of Upper Egypt. It isnt known what the crowns were made of, they could have been made of cloth, leather, reeds, or even metal.  Because no crowns have been found in burial tombs, even in those that were undisturbed, some historians speculate they were passed from pharaoh to Pharaoh. History of the Double Crown of Egypt Upper and Lower Egypt were united around the year 3150 BCE with some historians naming Menes as the first pharaoh and crediting him for inventing the pschent. But the double crown was first seen on a Horus of the pharaoh  Djet  of the First Dynasty, around 2980 BCE. The double crown is found in the Pyramid Texts. Nearly every pharaoh from 2700 through 750 BCE was depicted wearing the pschent in hieroglyphs preserved in tombs. The Rosetta Stone and the king list on the Palermo stone are other sources showing the double crown associated with pharaohs. Statues of Senusret II and Amenhotep  III are among many showing the double crown. The Ptolemy rulers wore the double crown when they were in Egypt but when they left the country they wore a diadem instead.

As one of Ogden’s business partners, Thomas Gibbons, operated his steamboats along the same route under a federal coasting license issued to him by an act of Congress. The Gibbons-Ogden partnership ended in dispute when Ogden claimed that Gibbons was undercutting their business by unfairly competing with him. Ogden filed a complaint in the New York Court of Errors seeking to stop Gibbons from operating his boats. Ogden argued that the license granted to him by the New York monopoly was valid and enforceable even though he operated his boats on shared, interstate waters. Gibbons disagreed arguing that the U.S. Constitution gave Congress the sole power over interstate commerce. The Court of Errors sided with Ogden. After losing his case in another New York court, Gibbons appealed the case to the Supreme Court, which ruled that the Constitution grants the federal government the overriding power to regulate how interstate commerce is conducted. Some of the Parties Involved The case of Gibbons v. Ogden was argued and decided by some of the most iconic lawyers and jurists in U.S. history. Exiled Irish patriot Thomas Addis Emmet and Thomas J. Oakley represented Ogden, while U.S. Attorney General William Wirt and Daniel Webster argued for Gibbons. The decision of the Supreme Court was written and delivered by America’s fourth Chief Justice John Marshall. â€Å". . . Rivers and bays, in many cases, form the divisions between States; and thence it was obvious, that if the States should make regulations for the navigation of these waters, and such regulations should be repugnant and hostile, embarrassment would necessarily happen to the general intercourse of the community. Ogden, 1824 The Decision In its unanimous decision, the Supreme Court ruled that Congress alone had the power to regulate interstate and coastal trade. The decision answered two pivotal questions about the Constitution’s Commerce Clause: First, exactly what constituted â€Å"commerce?† And, what did the term â€Å"among the several states† mean? The Court held that â€Å"commerce† is the actual trade of commodities, including the commercial transportation of commodities using navigation. Also, the word â€Å"among† meant intermingled with† or cases in which one or more states had an active interest in the commerce involved. Siding with Gibbons, the decision read, in part:   If, as has always been understood, the sovereignty of Congress, though limited to specified objects, is plenary as to those objects, the power over commerce with foreign nations and among the several states is vested in Congress as absolutely as it would be in a single government, having in its constitution the same restrictions on the exercise of the power as are found in the Constitution of the United States. The Significance of Gibbons v. Ogden   Decided 35 years after the ratification of the Constitution, the case of Gibbons v. Ogden represented a significant expansion of the power of the federal government to address issues involving U.S. domestic policy and the rights of the states. The Articles of Confederation had left the national government virtually powerless to enact policies or regulations dealing with the actions of the states. In the Constitution, the framers included the Commerce Clause in the Constitution to address this problem. Though the Commerce Clause gave Congress some power over commerce, it was unclear just how much. The Gibbons decision clarified some of these issues. The paper does not focus more on the reasons why the empire fell but looks at the conditions that surrounded the fall and how historians have been changing their views over the past years regarding the fall of the Tokugawa Empire. Other historians have criticized some of these historical interpretations. However, a keen look at some of the ar guments that led to the fall of the empire reveals that most historians have a similar view as to why the empire fell with slight differences. From most of their interpretations, the downfall of the Tokugawa Shogunate is attributed to their obsolete methods in economical, political and foreign affairs, other than the civil wars and battles over various positions in the colony among the Samurai. During the reign of the Tokugawa, there was a hierarchy of living. Politicians and those in government were considered to be at the top of the hierarchy while farmer’s carpenters and other laborers were considered to be at the bottom of the hierarchy. Due to this, the Samurai soldiers were fond of numerous killings and would be found cutting off people lower in the hierarchy without any reason1. Due to this, some of the people in the lower hierarchy would resists and come to war with the people in the upper and centre of the hierarchy. This was a common phenomenon since the early perio ds of the empire. Some early Japanese historians attributed this to the fall of the Tokugawa Empire. However, to Sir George Sansom, this is completely wrong. He points out that the oppressions of the Samurai people had been there since the beginning and that this did not point out to the fall of the empire. Published in 1932, Sir George’s history of the Japanese people has been widely used in the US to teach history students. Even though he disagree that the empire fell due to the oppressions felt on the people, he is fast in pointing out that the Tokugawa period was characterized by oppression and feudal rule. He clearly points out that people considered lower in the hierarchy were highly mistreated and some of them killed without mercy. He however points that soldiers solved such disputes and that it had nothing to do with the fall of the empire2. George points out that the Tokugawa government kept to themselves and never opened up to the west that was bringing change to th e rest of the world. Because of this, the government was left alone and continued to practice the old methods of governance, which had poor financial knowledge. The Aborigines are one of the oldest, unaffected cultures that remain in our world today. Their historical culture and territory, in the past, was unaffected by the constantly evolving world. Until recently, their historic society has remained sacred, yet today they are undergoing a colossal fight. The Australian government and uranium mining industries are attempting to build new mine fields, bullying Aborigine tribes and their leaders into ultimately selling their land for future nuclear waste dump sites. Their culture should be preserved due to the fact that many cultures have diminished, modified, and changed as our society and world has; they are truly one of a kind. They don’t let the outside influences of money and technologies affect their lives; they are content and proud of their ancestors and should be given the right to preserve their history, passing it down from generation to generation. Macpherson (2010) found that: In June 2007 the Howard Coalition government used the Little Children are Sacred report into child abuse in remote Northern Territory Aboriginal communities to invade these communities under what it called the Northern Territory Emergency Response (NTER)†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦. the Rudd Labor government has not only maintained the NTER, but also extended it. (para. 2) Basically, when tribe leaders decided to stand unified and decline the substantial financial offers, the companies began to look for a loophole. But later on,she ignores Victor, becomes a prostitute, then leaves Victor to hisUncle to go away with her new lover. -Tio Pedring Victor’s uncle, he adopted victor after the leaving of hissister. He forces victor to become a newspaper boy. -Nacio He is a newspaper boy. He was victor’s new friend. Thoughfull of cruel vices, Victor took his death as another major loss. Summary The father of the boy Victor got involved in a strike. He actsas though it was nothing and takes Victor to night walks aroundManila. He takes Victor’s mind off vices and promises Victor abright future someday.One day, during the strike. Victor’s father was shot dead inthe heart. His wife mourned greatly and his son was subdued. Thewife began to disappear late at night and come home early dawn.She refuses to take care of Victor. And then, she comes homewith some goon, telling that the goon will be Victor’s new dad.Victor didn’t like the stranger at all. As often as possible, he triesto stay out of his mom and her lover’s way.And then, Victor just woke up with his mother and the mangone. His Uncle Pedring introduces to take care of him. Herecruits Victor to a newspaper job. The man does not treat Victorwell unless he brings home money.During his job, Victor meets Nacio. Nacio was also anewspaper boy. He taught Victor various tricks in newspaperselling. They become close friends.Victor’s job grew prosperous. Soon, his â€Å"Boss† starts to trusthim with a ration of 20 papers a day. He becomes contented withhis life until-Nacio was run over a car. He was dead. Victor grieved for hisfriend just like the way he did with his father. Friendship is a wonderful part of life, but it can unfortunately be used to deceive, for it is easy to manipulate with it, but only true friendship cannot be defeated, even after death. This element could well likely be the very thing that had sealed the fate of Julius Caesar, and Brutus, Cassius, and all the other conspirators knew that they could use this to their advantage, and to Caesars disadvantage. Friendship, was what the conspirators used as a cover to blind Caesar from the truth, just as a hunter uses camouflage to keep the animals from seeing what he is up to. The conspirators also used camouflage, but they used flattery along with manipulation as a way to soothe any feelings of doubt that Caesar may have had about their†¦show more content†¦Antony uses these deceiving words in order to manipulate Brutus, and he also said this so he could persuade Brutus and put all of Brutuss worries about where Antony stood with them, at ease. Antony uses his great ability to ma nipulate through speech, to convince Brutus to let him give the eulogy at Caesars funeral, and Brutus thinking that Antony is now their friend, agrees with barely any hesitation.
